I had taken the 上海市磁浮列車 or Shanghai Maglev to and from the airport this time... although subway #2 also go directly both to the Pu-Dong airport and Lujiazui (陆家嘴) where I stayed.
On my way to the airport, it took less than 8 minutes for the 上海市磁浮列車 or Shanghai Maglev to go something like 30 KM... with the highest speed as 431 KM/HR. Apparently, it is even faster than the French TGV....
The regular price for the Maglev running between the airport and the city is 50 yuan (RMB). However, discount tickets are also available.... As a traveler, you can get 20% off and pay one 40 yuan (RMB) if you show the ticket agent your same-day flight ticket. Otherwise, paying fare using 'Jiaotong' card (sort of like the NYC metrocard except for there is a 20 yuan (RMB) deposit fee for the card).
For first-time travelers to Shanghai, especially budget travelers like me, if you intend to use the metro or the buses as your major means for transportation, I would recommend you to purchase the Jiaotong card.
You could actually purchase the card directly from the Maglev ticket counter and have them add the money to the card.
