Conversion disorder or psycho-soma soma psycho kinda thing

So I went to see the shrink for my regular visit on Monday and, yes, I go to see a shrink religiously regardless the dosage etc.

Interestingly, the psychiatrist also remembers me now.

I always see him at this location... sort of like the center for the Bureau of National Health Insurance where doctors from all different hospitals would come in to practice.

This doctor is from psychiatric institute where I had my internship in my much younger year...

Anyways, I told him that... recently, the weather changes a lot... in my domain...and blah blah blah...

He suggested adding zoloft and maybe upping Seroquel as well... though it would be my judgment call in terms of the dosages...

We ended the session with this question that I have to ask this shrink again a question I posed to many others...

"I am schizowhatever and have depression as well.  Chances are, they might have some contributions to my physical condition and the recovery process.   Do you have any suggestion on how to get this done with?"

Guess... there is nothing much that I want... I just want a cure or a treatment that would work for me.... to take it all away... and, of course, one that doesn't involve... to be or not to be.... 8-O 8-X lol

I am crazy. Period.

How hard is that? 8-O lol sigh

What does it feel like to be conversion-disordered?

Zyngaing away aimlessly with here I go again going on and on again in the backgroud...

I have this question in my mind... yet, failing to decode...

"What does it feel like to be conversion-disordered?" (Whatever conversion disorder might be... and, again, I do not claim myself to be an expert in conversion disorder since that is one diagnosis I have not been officially assigned yet by a shrink... 8-O lol)

On a second thought... this is such a great song to speak for people with recurrent chronic conditions... 8-O lol

Conversion disorder all over

A picture of Conversion Disorder
Scrambled texts are Chinese
Don't know whether it has anything to do with the Chinese herb my dad cooked to help the flow of Xi or the conversation I had with this man at the labor department about whether I should get "disable-ly" certified cuz of my physical restrictions...

Then... when I went for my walk later, my body was doing the big bad bug in different ways and pains here and there everywhere...

Been doing file conversions after conversions since yesterday till conversion disorder all over... 8-O lol

Romantic

My body is getting better...

Still use the cane as a support but something tells me that I can do away without it in a day or two...

During my walk today, this thought came to me again....

There is something seriously romantic about the notion of psychosomatisation....

Them people adopting this worldview gotta be seriously romantic.... sort of like so very fussy feeling....

I wonder what it might feel like for someone to suspect whether a patient has conversion disorder...

Whether they go...

"OMG... Finally.... I found the one... all these years of waiting and pondering... I have been preparing for this day for so long..... Where have you been in my entire life!" 8-O lol

Sort of like....

Just my imagination...

As long as you don't ask me what it means to be romantic....

Why pain now

As I was taking the shower, I tried to think of the plausible reason why I, all of a sudden why be in such much pain... above and beyond the contribution of da theory that I might have slept wrong two night ago...

  1. One theory would be that this is a form of psychosomatisation.... the pain has come back out because I am undergoing high stress level....
  2. Another theory would be that I am more studious than I know... Since I have to go back to the pain literatures, my body and mind or my conversion disordered self decided to bring pain back out as the supplementary learning materials... 8-O 8-X lol sigh

And, if you ask me, what about them pains running around different places...

  1. The first theory would be it is the manifestation of psychomatisation... whatever that means...
  2. A second theory I have is that it has something to do with the qi moving....
  3. The third and last theory would be... my prefrontal cortext is going out of wack and it is interpreting signals that might not even exist...
8-O lol 8-X

Zu Hause sein: Being at home

I have been spending some time in this online social networking place and, today, I found this discussion forum titled "The Mental Ward"...

No offense to my normal people... However, as I was browsing through the postings... I had this strange feeling of... Zu Hause sein: Being at home...

It was then did I realise that... I have been Andrew in the movie Bicentennial man who spent all these years for the others like him and finally find them....

Following is what I posted in this forum:

Just want to say that this feels like heaven to find somewhere where people also have psychosis and/or neurosis as their profile....

Wonderful sense of belonging...

It is as if I have been Andrew in the movie Bicentennial man who spent all these years for the others like him and finally find them....

Following are my responses:

1) Where are you from? Originally from Taiwan, Now in NYC

2) What's your diagnosis? Through out the years, I have been given many different labels, ranging from depression, delusional disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, panic disorder... a neurologist I went to see for my back problem and inability to walk suspected that I might have conversion disorder, a type of psychosomatisation although I have never been officially diagnosed by a psychiatrist with this label

3) Are you on any meds? If so which ones? Through out the years, I have taken zoloft, wellbutrin, zyprexa, risperdal, dapakote, clonazapam and Seroquel. Currently, I am on 500 mg Seroquel daily and Clonazapam whenever I have something like a panic or anxiety attack.

4) Are you under psychiatric care? yes.

5) Do you seek counseling? I used to see a therapist. Nowaday, no because I don't have the money for it.

6) Have you ever been hospitalized? Yes. Three times.... three full-blown psychotic episodes.

7) What other methods do you actively employ for your recovery? Vitamins, walking and qi kinda exercise (the only exercise I could do due to my back condition)as well as a web of social support from family and friends

In addition, my psychosis is late onset... it was not until I was in my 30s when I first experienced psychotic symptoms. I went in and out of the psychiatric ward twice when I was working on my dissertation. Moreover, I was running the experiment for my dissertation all the way till I got locked up and went right back to run my experiments right after I was released... and, I eventually, living with symptoms that never cease, got my doctoral degree...

In other words, neurotic or psychotic, although we might need to take a detour at times, we can do it!!!

Conversion disorder revisited

After what happened these two days with my mobility issue, on my way out to work today, I put my back brace on with the eating pad attached. I also spent that two dollars of bus fare to get to my workplace 10 Manhattan blocks away....

So, I got to work on time...

I arrived at work with not too much of them spasms...

At some point during the day, someone told me this funny story....

Someone saw two guys helping me into a car yesterday and they came asking him whether I was abducted.

Some funny side story there...

Yet, what happened yesterday was left to yesterday....

Today, I got myself well-prepared....

In addition to a pair of jumper under the jeans, three sweater and a heavy shirt plus the heavy winter coat... plus a pad heated for 20 seconds in the microwave...

I could move around with more elegance...

I actually made it home with negligent numbers of stops....

Since I was locked down inside by my body last night (instead of due to my head, once for a change), I went hanging out tonight, instead.... while, in my head, I couldn't figure it out... a logical reason for the drastic difference in my mobility over 1 day..

I could attribute it to the 3 hours plus exercise I did after I got home yesterday...

I could attribute it to the warming up of the weather...

I could make myself belief that all is logical and there is nothing more needed to be said...

Yet, it just doesn't make sense....

It absolutely doesn't make sense... the drastic differences in how I walked yesterday and how much more smoothly I am moving today...

This is crazier, actually, than my hearing voices and having delusional thoughts... the differences between how I am today and how I was yesterday...

Sort of traumatized by the perceivable inconsistency... I would say...

It makes no sense... and, to be honest, it is far more fxcked up and illogical than I could take and I was ever asked to take...

And, the term conversion disorder came up to my mind....

I thought to myself....

Why don't I just attribute the whole 9 yards to conversion disorder?

The labeling of conversion disorder makes the drastic differences so much legit and so much easier to accept... what is otherwise unexplainable.... and regardless what conversion disorder really means...

For the first time in my life, I find myself seeking comfort in a label I once tried so hard to evade....

Nice label... conversion disorder... so I thought and feel still... for... assuming myself to have conversion disorder... no longer is it my burden to figure out what exactly has taken place.... and, it makes me feel so sure.... because... it can't be real...

I don't know what it be like for you... to live through a day when both feet dropped while facing minor mobility problem for the second day... for me, somehow all of it just makes me feel so much more cognitively dissonant than I could take and it just can't be real... 8-O lol sigh

Wish for Zeros

I guess that, the closer it gets to the new year, the more antsy and blue I get...

So, I spent the majority of time today trying to work on this dataset about disability and functionality... A project I started working on after I returned to New York in August and got put off by my brain as a result of the deterioration in that mental state of mine.

So, I spent the remaining amount of this year that is soon to past trying to get my head and body together... one day at a time... or... one night at a time, more appropriately...

Then, three days ago, I woke up with my mind setting on nothing more than this set of data I found online...

This dataset would not have captured my attention shall I had not fallen victim to the weak G.... an incident that took a huge chunk of the prime time in my life away, which, up to this day, leaves me wonder whether there have been people whose only response was how bad it might have looked as I fell freely to the ground after the chair collapsed in front of the whole crowd.... be it a delusional thought or not...

Unfortunately, such sentiment of losing face has not been and has never been my concern... for, I had my own big fish to fry... pain and diminished functionality was more or less the issue I have to deal with.

In any case, I woke up in the morning... into another day closer to the beginning of the new year... into another day to be wasted away...

And, I woke up to go back to finish analyzing this gigantic dataset... about the once foreign concept of functionality and disability....

So, people were asked whether they had problems in... eating, getting in/out of bed, getting around inside, dressing, bathing, getting to the bathroom or using toilet, doing heavy house work, doing light house work, doing laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, getting about outside, traveling, managing money, taking medicine, and, telephoning...

With 16 indicators they had functionality and disability defined... with 1 representing disabled and 0 representing healthy...

Then, the longer I stared into the dataset or the analyses I conducted, the more the forgotten past started to flash by....

And, I realize... no longer do I need to create a third space on such simple indicators deeply to empathize... for that space is inside...

I did not really have it easy... though I know I did not get it all that bad....

At least, one thing I know is that... my condition has been on its track towards recovery... except for when the temperature drops below the 30s... my conversion-disorder grade of slow and stop would still find its way back to me... (which makes me wonder... why isn't that a good man rather... 8-O lol)

Then...

I thought of people responded with 1 to all of the 16 items... and all that I could think of is that... it must be tough and I wish them all the best...

I also thought of people with 0 as their default response... and I wish them keep it that way...

For those responded to the 16 items with different combinations of 0s and 1s... like me and many people I have conversed with, and, when recalling our conditions at different points in time, good luck, kept your spirits up and wish you the best in finding the best way to deal with and better your conditions....

So...

I recall what I have been hearing all this time...

"Take it outside of yourself..."

So... to myself I thought... let it be my new year's wish... for us with them 1s turning them 1s back to 0s...

Conversion Disorder

So, I was watching this back episode of House the other day...

One of the episode I watch last year when I was haunted by the possibility of psychosomatization and conversion disorder....

Then, I saw this episode...

The woman could not see...

There was no easily identifiable etiology behind it...

So, someone suggested...

Conversion disorder.... 8-O lol

在劫難逃 III: 臭頭多藥

臭頭多藥 is a very earthy Taiwanese saying….

臭頭 means having dermatological disease on your head.

多藥 means many different kinds of treatments.

Essentially, this expression means that when you got no idea what to do with your sickness, all that you could do is to try out all treatments imaginable on this planet.

I have struggled for almost a whole year trying to recover from my spinal condition while all, including myself, agree that the degree of pains and mobility difficulties seem to exceed what my 6 herniated discs ranging from cervical, thoracic and lumbar area could explain. My sensitivity to pain also seems to be unheard of (according to this brother of mine who is an orthopedic doctor), especially the part when I claim to experience intensified pains when encountering vibrations or loud sound.

I suspect the worsening of my mental condition might also have something to do with the repercussion of the injury… however, apparently, depression seems to be the best documented psychological co-morbidity and I haven’t really come across cases involving psychotic kinda disorder as the co-morbidity.

When I was planning my trip to come back to Taiwan this year (only to find out today that the United States of America decided to not let me go back lol), I have made up my mind to adopt the status of a 臭頭 so as to proceed with the 多藥 strategy.

Within the past few weeks, I not only have gone to see orthopedics doctors and neurologists but, for the first time, received treatment using traction, acupuncture, chi-Kong (energy healing) and “God's” healing through psychic mediums.

Yours 臭頭 or Ratprincess had come to the realization that all of the 多藥 seems to be working on imposing additional pains, releasing blood and, sometimes, worsening mobility in order to reach the optimal treatment effects. Following are some of the alternative treatments I have newly experienced….

Traction or the modern 五馬分屍法:

My mom has been telling me to do the traction thing. Essentially, you are stripped to a seat or the bed while the moving part of the equipment tries to pull your head or your lower body away from the rest part of your body. The assumption is that… in time, we might be able to get that herniated disk less herniated.

Acupuncture or the purposeful enactment of 血光之災:

An aunt of mine is a doctor of Eastern medicine and is trained in acupuncture. Accordingly, the optimal effects of acupuncture come after extreme pains… As a result, the more painful, the better…. Essentially, there are two major types of pains. The first is the pains associated with having needles stick into a specific region or 穴道. The second is the pains triggered by these needles in remote regions.

In addition to the Mickey mouse amount of blood I shade due to the ordinary needling, my aunt also perform the art of 放血 in the back of my right knee. Funny enough, I really saw two types of blood on the tissue she used—fresh red blood and darker stickier blood.

Energy Healing:

My dad took me to this energy healer who asserts that all conditions could find a relief as long as our inner energy source is invoked. When I went to see the energy healer for the first time, she asked me to write my name down on a piece of paper and fanned the piece of paper to get a sense of, I guess, my energy field. I was informed that my whole spine is very much fucked up and my spinal problem might have caused problems in other parts of my internal organ. It was much later, after I received my free treatments from her disciples was I told that… I am so sick all over the places that… she actually had to go to the toilette to throw up after sensing my energy filed… 8-O (Oh, my lord… 罪過, 罪過 and here I 造業 again….)

Regarding the treatment, they lied me down on a couch and had two people placing three of their fingers at different locations along my spine. The amazing thing is that… I could sense it when they do it… In addition, their action did not result in a sense of comfort… on the other, the various degrees of pains at different part of my body were triggered. The pains did not stay at one location… rather, they moved around throughout my body….

Afterwards, when we were trying to get home… I realized that my “walkability” had gone back to a few steps at a time-- reliving the pains and disability I lived through the first few months after the accident on June 19th, 2007.

They had warned me, though, in advance of this phenomenon called 瞑眩反應.

Accordingly, the goal of Chinese medicine is to help the body build its own strength so as to perform self-reparation, which subsequently, might result in 瞑眩反應. 瞑眩反應 is natural healing process for the body. While some patients could experience immediate relief from treatments, others might actually experience the worsening of existing conditions. Still others might even find old problems that were suppressed but not cured to resurface.

I was told that, because my condition has lasted for so long and so severe, what the treatment might do is to trigger the worsening of my pains and disability before seeing improvement.

Call it self-fulfilling prophesy or psychosomatization… the immediate worsening of the condition—I lived it…

Chi-Kong: Ratprincess on fire-- 火氣 and元神

Then, my dad and my mom took me to this rehabilitation doctor who uses Chi-Kong in his practice.

The first day I went to see him, he must have done some work on work on the chi pathway… I don't quite remember today whether the pains became aggravated during the meeting… What I could not forget is the fact that, after the appointment, on our way home, I started to have more and more difficulties walking… fewer steps before a rest and more difficulties lifting my feet… until I could not life my feet at all--- regressing to the walking style I unfortunately adopted for many a day right after my injury. Thank God almighty, after the worsening of the gait, spasm, and, pain hit its height, my walking gradually became better to the extent that I eventually made it home…

Another manifestation of 瞑眩反應… I guess…

Interesting enough, based on his “chi-ish” observation, this doctor of mine suggested against my receiving the ordinary physical therapy practices (in other words, no more traction again) because, according to him, there are too many problems along my spine and these problems are small and difficult for people to observe. Given the nature of the problem, not only will other people be unable to fixed my really fucked up body, if they try, they would actually make things worse. The only way to get the condition resolved is to accept and allow our 元神 or 氣 or “Chi” that constitutes and created me to fix myself.

So far, I have seen this doctor about four times… The funny thing about my meeting with this doctor is that everything he does is “Chi” related. The first two times when I saw him, he tried to unblock the pathway of my “chi” by using his hands to make certain motions without even having to touch me. Yet, I actually sensed either the impacts or the changes in my body accordingly… 8-O

The only thing he told me to do is to lie down in bed and move my legs towards my torso with my feet resting on the bed. In this position, gently and slowly swing both knees from left to right and vice versa… and try to, eventually, let the body, not the mind, lead the flow— both in speed and direction—of the motion.

When I went to see him the other day, he started by asking me to hit my elbow against his palm in a certain way… Then, without him touching me, I started to feel氣 or “Chi” moving around my body… struggling to descend from my head down to my feet.

I still could not quite understand why I feel so clearly the way I do… the moving, blocking, turning and releasing of 氣 chi inside of my body.

While Chi was moving around in my body, he gave us a brief introduction on the concept of chi and 元神… Essentially, what he is trying to do with me is to unblock the pathway of chi so that my 元神 could help me get myself repaired.

Remember that I had mentioned in my previous posting that my body would “stretch” my neck to the left, to the right and pull my neck up as if I were getting neck treatment from a chiropractor…

What the doctor mentioned reminded me of such and I told him of such experiences.

He confirmed that the “physical therapy” my own body applies to itself could be much to the point and effective than those performed by other people on me. What he does for me is nothing more than getting rid of some barriers so that my 元神 could enter my body to perform reparation.

He also mentioned that we all have the ability to sense the movement of 氣 or chi in our body except for special conditions tend to make it easier for us to observe such feeling.

“Think clearly and you will be able to recall observations alike even earlier on in your life… “ He added.

It, then, occurred to me, all these bodily sensations I have mentioned in my postings throughout the years….

It could be the observations I made in the times of the most severe pains, when I had to take a break with each every step due to the pains, how I often had this feeling of having some energy coming down from the top of my head and spreading throughout my body to calm my body and ease the pains.

It could be when I used to wake up in the morning, feeling this sense of energy coming down from my head to greet me morning in the voice of God (my, ok, psychotic interpretation).

I have been confused or shocked by the doctor's comments ever since because such sensations of mine which have long been classified as the bodily kinda hallucinations…. from the perspective of Chi-Kong, is considered “normal.” Furthermore, the doctor indicated… I am exceptionally lucky to be so very perceptive because ordinary people could not have such experiences…. 8-O

Before I left our appointment today, I asked the doctor another strange phenomenon I observed recently…

When in standing position, recently, I often have this strange feeling that my hands would be lifted by some kind of force… like chi…

The doctor replied, “It is your火氣 that is coming out from your body because your 元神 could now come in to get the bad chi out.”

“When would my 火氣 be let all out?” I asked.

“When you could truly accept your 元神—that is yourself—and stop fighting about being who you are. Be true to yourself… don't lie to yourself.” He responded.

“Does it mean that it is 心病?” Following the conversion disorder way of thinking… I asked.

His response... essentially… mind can't be separated from body and body can’t be separated from the mind. Thus, all is about 心病 the component of 心 is always there.

Somewhere along our conversations, I was told again and again, “This has nothing to do with Gods and Ghosts. All was destined… including why the chair would collapse under you. It will do you good if you could move through it.” (the multiple manifestation of the same principle-- 在劫難逃—again I thought…)

Since I can't quite see yet what good my experiences and the process could bring to me now…

On the day when the denial of US visa application got my 火氣 risen again, I decided to finish this posting wishing there is some good my 劫 could do for you…. for a selfish reason… the world is connected… your good is my good, regardless.

In addition, already do I need to apologize to those who might have done me wrong (in my perspective) for the potential to add 業障 to their own karma (oops), why on earth do I want to cumulate more 怨氣 to the pre-existing 心火? (阿彌陀佛, 善哉善哉, May God bless you, your house, your family) lol

Medical experts' alternative hypothesis

Ever since I got back to Taiwan from New York over 2 weeks ago, I spend the majority of my time on three things... sleeping, TV watching and health care seeking--- including that for my spinal condition.

An alternative hypothesis the medical experts' have concerning my condition is "Upper motor neuron disorder." Essentially, the impact of the fall might have stirred the tofu in my head a bit too excessively.

Since there is no cure and no good prognosis for this condition, I think, at this stage, I would rather stick to the diagnosis of conversion disorder since, at least, the damage won't be organic... 8-O lol

I won't know for a while since tests still have to be conducted.... 8-X

Conversion disorder update

Conversion disorder has been a ghost hanging around by myself since I had my injury at work in June, 2006, which put me in pain no one could understand and mobile disability.

In theory, if it is all the ordinary stress I experience that is contributing to my psychological maladjustment, by removing myself from the US, we shall be able to see miracle, AKA me suddenly moving with no spasms no more.

Arriving in Taipei yesterday, I did not really have the time to check out my walkability. Yet, today, after I paid a visit to a psychiatrist, I walked home and observed myself having to stop for spasms as usual.... to be honest, I seemed to be walking fewer steps before hitting a stop... which might have something to do with that 24 hour long trip I took to get back to Taipei from New York City.

Or, perhaps, my conversion disorder might have intensified because the synergistic effect of having my mama and papa together causes more stress that those I had in NYC... lol (oops... how impious a daughter I am... 8-X)

Self observations

It has been officially a week since the dosage of Depakote went down by 50% to 250 mg.

Granted, I am becoming much more alert and less flat. Yet, the head still doesn't really move the way I would like it to...

Reading remain to be a task too strenuously... and make me feel as if I were to develop a tension headache.... (or the alternative hypothesis could rest in the diagnosis of "conversion disorder" etc? 8-O lol 8-X)

Since it doesn't really feel all that nice for me to keep my head in a vacuous state, as I have mentioned before, nowadays, I dependent mostly on audio books or listening to lectures to push information into that air head of mine.

An interesting thing I observed in myself is that... the sense of impatience has found its comeback. I guess this might have something to do with the affect department.

When listening to Homer's Iliad this morning while doing some photoshopping, I came across this chapter read by this gentleman at an "exceptionally slow speed" (as perceived by me) while I knew my head now could process more information that what was fed to me. The given frustration led me to find out that Windows Media Player allows you to change the playing speed and I ended up started to listen to all recordings at 1.3 times of the original speed.... and, of course, cut down on the amount of time it takes to go through each book.

At some point, I thought to myself... it would have been nice if I also could find all the research paper and writings I intend to read in audio format... call it the adaptive technology for people with my kinda learning or cognitive processing impairment, if not disability.

There are fleeting kinda hallucinations running around at times. However, the occurrences are relatively rare... Under the assumption that overactivities of my symptoms often equates to more effective and efficient processing of my head, I actually asked my head whether it is possible for it to spare me a bit more positive symptoms at times.

Regardless whether it was my wish being granted, these two days, my hallucinations and delusions have been telling me to "quit smoking." lol

Another hallucination that has been hovering around is the word... "Ratology."

Such is my status report on a head-somehow-doesn't-move-again day. 8-O lol sigh

Romantic

I also often ponder whether people actually think the concept of psychosomatization as a romantic one although there is nothing romantic I see when it is applied to me... 8-O lol

The reason why I use the word romantic is simple.

Following the doctrine of psychoanalysis, one could easily see my inability to move as the manifestation of my inability to move towards goals I have in mind... be it green card, employment, etc. The inability to obtain these goals makes me feel stuck and, talented as I am, my mind actually could create spasms to stall my movement.

In other words, it is all about what is hurting in my heart... man, isn't that romantic?

I also often thought that, if there is anything that had really driven me into the cuckoo's nest and contributed to the real manifestation of psychosomatization in my condition, it would have to do with my love for people and how much I care about people, including their potential perception that my condition is all psychopathological kinda psychosomatic and starting from that Dr. Conversion Disorder or that Dr. IME 25 bls....

In this perspective, my physical condition could be perceived as the manifestation of a self-fulfilling prophecy, except for the prophecy I eventually fulfilled is what other people might have wished for (beware what you wish for and ... lol). My love and care about people is such much that I can not bear the thought of their plausible dreams not coming true.... oh, no can't do...

As a result, I tried my best and from the bottom of my heart, although unwittingly, turned myself psychosomatic and into a case of conversion disorder to fulfill people's need for a sense of fulfillment . Of course, such a modus operandi might also have something to do with my collective cultural background and interdependent self-construal.... (Or, is what I am doing... social loafing? lol)

Such a degree of love and care... isn't that romantic?! xoxo lol

Signifcance level

The call I received somehow reminds me of this concept of "statistical significance" and "significant results."

So I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out what the concept of "statistical significance" has to do with the unfolding of life's story.

I tried really hard to do the free association thing but kept on experiencing blockage in unveiling more revelations.

When I decided to take a smoking break, I realized that I again, perhaps, was trapped in a local minimum.... while, today, the brain doesn't work too well and I might not be able to see where the global solution might be...

And, I thought... the processing of finishing my dissertation was one that converted me from a significance addict to one seeing the significance of insignificance.

[Begin Dissertation]

My dissertation might have the fewest number of statistical significances in the history of all dissertations or you could all it the dissertation of insignificance of all time.

When I started, I had wished to come up with a piece of work that could look as beautiful as any other work I have seen in journal articles... essentially, with "p<.05" everywhere in the result session. Unfortunately, despite all my efforts, I just could not see any consistent statistical significance in the test results. After analyzing and reanalyzing my data gazillion times, at some point, I decided that enough is enough and I got rid of 2/3 of my data (ok... sounds like cheating). With only 1/3 of the original data, I finally found some consistency in the test results. Unfortunately, the majority of these results did not reach the statistical significance level of p<.05. So, I went back to my adviser and I told him something like, "Now I finally got consistent results for my study except for I didn't find too many statistical significance in my study." And, I guess, both of us agree that the most significant finding is that, somehow the model I was trying to test just doesn't work with the interface I have designed. [End Dissertation] Then, recently, I am helping someone else analyzing his data. Similar scenario occurred with his data set where the numbers we got from his data are not as beautiful as what we would like it to be. During my meeting with him, all of a sudden, the results he got reminded me of those I obtained in my dissertation and I heard myself telling him, "Just because you do not get statistical significance or high correlation doesn't mean the findings are not significant. Significance is about how you choose to make interpretions about your findings and to elaborate upon them. Such is what I have to say about the significance level. Please find following the paragraphs I drafted in local minimum. 8-O lol

[Begin Statistical Significance in Local Minimum]

In academia, papers need to have statistical significance in order to be accepted for publications by journals. Statistical significances are also one evaluation criteria for dissertations shall the study involves some kind of "stats".

The need to find "statistical significance" for the hypothesis being tested does make sense because it is a simple way to filter out studies that do not tell us too much about any thing.

At the same time, just because something reaches statistical significance, it doesn't mean the results are of any meaning.

However, just because a study does not find too many of the statistical significances, it doesn't mean that the study results are deemed to be insignificant in all capacities.

Statistical significances themselves could only offer little information and they are only as important as the amount of meaningfulness we are willing to assign to them or to become attached to them.

It, then, occurs to me that... such phenomena could be observed in the everyday life.... Take the egocentric me for instance...

  1. There were so many a time when I thought, if I tried harder, I would be able to beat the odds and keep the relationship together. (similar to statistical insignificance since they all are jackasses now)
  2. There was once upon a time when I wanted to be someone significant, be it a guru in usability, an expert in forensic or any other kinds of psychology, etc. (similar to statistical insignificance since I am no guru in no nothing)
  3. There was also once and not to long ago when I wanted to prove to the world that a psychotic and neurotic (although a friend of mine told me that I am the least neurotic person she knows) could amount to something. (similar to statistical insignificance in real world and statistical significance in my delusional world, which means nothing to nobody... lol)
  4. Then, there came a time when I wanted to prove to people that it is not conversion disorder that is solely responsible for my pains and mobility problems. (similar to statistical significance for people who still thinks it is all but psychosomatic or conversion thing; yet, what could you do about it? lol)
  5. And, of course, to this date, I am still struggling to test out whether psychotics could make use of their cognition to cope with the side effects of their cognition. (similar to statistical insignificance considering I went into the cuckoo's nest; yet, similar to statistical significance since I think I am coping pretty well... lol)

Depressed still

I often think that there are a lot of things I could do to help myself... However, many other things are outside of my own control... as a result, it doesn't really make sense to be fussing about them and all that I could do is to go with the flow.

Such as, shall depression be inevitable, whether it is because I am too drugged out or whatever the reasons there might be, there is nothing else I could do than to let it run through. I could try to do tiny little things such as putting up a smile to confused my head or not allowing myself to stay in bed not moving--- it is God's will when depression will pass but hopefully it had hit the bottom today.

In addition, it might take a bit more time until the impact of the decrease depako dosage to show....

At some point during the day, I thought to myself...

Gee, it is not so easy being a depressive psychotic in chronic pain and handicapped in the mobility department who might also fall under the department of conversion disorder, hysteric personality disorder, multiple personality disorder or maybe even PTSD... 8-O lol sigh

Somapsychotic

A good friend of mine asked me today when we were hanging for a bit...

What happened before my hospitalization and what were the implications?

Essentially, the condition seemed to have started to go downwards for a while.

Then, the severity, including both frequency and impact, of the symptoms gotten worse, which made the severity even worse.

The inability to sleep not only allowed my head to rest not. In addition, all those hours of insomnia were also perfect for the creation of delusions, which created even more stress and stress made things worse.

It was amazing, though, that, all that it took was, perhaps, a couple of days before my sleeplessness in the city that never sleep, and, the 2 straight days of unable to fall asleep--- to flush my head down the toilette.

It is possible that... the amount of delusions and hallucinations created through the hours of sleeplessness might have exceeded the total amount I experienced in the past few years, not including the times when symptoms are more prominent.

Since about Feb. 10th up to today, March 9th, in about 1 month time, I have gone from gradually going into the even more coo coo side to so very well dosed up by all kinds of medications that I feel not so much positive symptoms (hallucinations and delusions) and lesser severity of pain (since the antidepressants and antipsychotic drugs also blocks the neurotransactions relating to pain perception).

My doctors asked me... what happened?

I looked back to June 19th, 2007, on which day, I was in a meeting and fell in sitting position from a chair that collapsed under me.

Before that, my mental condition might go up and down but with a smaller amount of variance.

Then, there came the accident... I was in pain. I was immoble. There was the talk of psychosomatization and conversion disorder because, given my psychiatric profile, some people think it is my mind causing the perception of pain and contribute to the mobility problem.

Then, sometime last week, it occurred to me....

Perhaps, it is the inverse... it is not psychosomatic.

For me, it is Somapsychotic---

I have tried to use my head, yes, to control the physical pains so hard that... at some point, the brain finally gives up.... after I went back to work again and imposed on my brain both stress on my dear M&M like neurotransmitters such as dopamines (shall this theory hold true) excessive amount of work in both pain perception and work-related stress.

Other people might fall into the dire of depression, which I have done in the summer of 2007.

My physical condition also drove me psychotic even more... "somapsychotic"-- the conversion of conversion disorder etc. lol

Not my issue any more and I will just leave them to the experts... since now I am just gonna move on to technologies and craft (shall you be able to call that art).... that shall be the next chapter of my life's journey.
